A nautilus shell’s whirling spiral, sacred to both religion and geometry, symbolizes eternity. The nautilus shell is one of Nature’s perfect examples of the Divine Phi, a ratio of 1 to 1.618. In the nautilus shell, what this means is that each chamber is 1.618 times larger then the previous chamber. The math has already been done for you in this pattern that includes a full-size master drawing and step-by-step instructions to complete a 25″ x 40″ quilt. No applique or curved piecing is necessary to create the gentle curves in your choice of Spring Into Christmas or Happy Flowers. Folded squares or rectangles are inserted into the seams of the blocks. Then the folded bias edge of the inserted piece is gently pulled over and top-stitched in place to create the curves which add movement and character to these bright and happy quilts.

Join us at the Museum of Northwest Art in downtown La Conner for a lecture on the History of Hawaiian Quilting by Nancy Lee Chong. Nancy began making Hawaiian quilts in 1978, and immediately became a student of the folklore surrounding this spectacular quilting art form. With her own quilts, she shares what she has learned about the traditions and superstitions that are interwoven with Hawaiian quiltmaking, the mysterious story of how they began, and how they became her obsession.  Afterwards, meet Nancy and fellow enthusiasts for hors d’oeuvres and beverages.

Nancy’s Bio:  Her first quilt was a queen size Hawaiian quilt; made in 1980, while she was living in Hawaii. She began teaching stress-free needleturn techniques and Hawaiian quiltmaking in 1982. Nancy’s degree in education, her experience with all styles of appliqué, and her understanding of what a beginner goes through, makes her one of the premier appliqué teachers in the US. She is co-owner of Pacific Rim Company and a faculty member at QuiltUniversity.com

Hawaiian quilts, awesome in their symmetry, are surprisingly easy to make. Nancy has been making Hawaiian quilts since 1978; she knows them intimately. In this one-day class, you will have hands-on experience with cutting out a Hawaiian block, basting, and needleturn appliqué. Nancy has designed a tulip pattern to commemorate to the Skagit Valley. Even though you will work on the tulip block in class, you will learn everything you need to make a large Hawaiian quilt. The class is process-oriented, not product-oriented, so will finish the day learning Nancy’s stress-free needleturn appliqué techiniques on a piece of “practice” fabric.
