The Applique Society Meetings

Please join the “Applaconners” Chapter of The Appliqué Society, which will meet twice a month at the La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum, 703 2nd St, La Conner, WA. Bring along a project to work on or for Show ‘n Tell. We will have an appliqué quilt from our permanent collection on display. This month’s quilt is Centennial Quilt. A red, white, and blue beauty made with patterns cut from the newspaper in the early 1930′s. The patterns, called Old Glory were designed by Mary Erckenbrack and appeared in the Seattle Star. It features white stars appliquéd onto red circles, which are appliquéd to a blue square. The alternate blocks have an embroidered motif for each state. This quilt, and the original newspaper patterns, will be on display on our first floor through September 2010.

Two Day Groups: 2nd Monday, 1:00 pm - 3:00pm AND 3rd Thursday, 9:00 am – 11:00 am (stay longer if you like.) Location: La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum, 703 2nd St, La Conner, WA

Museum Estate Sale

This year’s Estate Sale, benfitting the La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum and the Museum of Northwest Art, will expand to four days over the Labor Day weekend. Event to be held at the Dakota Arts Store, 17871 SR 536 Mount Vernon, WA 98273.

Friday, September 3, 5:30-9 pm – Pre-Sale Party; $15 per person, $25 per couple.

Saturday & Sunday, September 4 & 5, Free and open to the public; hours 10-5 pm.

Monday, September 6, Free and Open to the public; hours 10-4 pm.

Your donations made last year’s event very successful! Do you have something that is taking up space that you would like to donate for this vital fundraiser? We are now taking donations of antiques, collectibles, quality contemporary items, furniture, glass, china, quilts, and much more!

An Evening at MoNA with Nancy Lee Chong

Thursday, September 30; 6 – 8:30pm

Join us at the Museum of Northwest Art in downtown La Conner for a lecture on the History of Hawaiian Quilting by Nancy Lee Chong. Nancy began making Hawaiian quilts in 1978, and immediately became a student of the folklore surrounding this spectacular quilting art form. With her own quilts, she shares what she has learned about the traditions and superstitions that are interwoven with Hawaiian quiltmaking, the mysterious story of how they began, and how they became her obsession. Afterwards, meet Nancy and fellow enthusiasts for hors d’oeuvres and beverages.

Hawaiian attire is optional, but encouraged.

Cost: $25 per person

This event is part of Quilt Fest 2010.

Nancy’s Bio: Her first quilt was a queen size Hawaiian quilt; made in 1980, while she was living in Hawaii. She began teaching stress-free needleturn techniques and Hawaiian quiltmaking in 1982. Nancy’s degree in education, her experience with all styles of appliqué, and her understanding of what a beginner goes through, makes her one of the premier appliqué teachers in the US. She is co-owner of Pacific Rim Company and a faculty member at QuiltUniversity.com
