“Restoring an old Victorian house is most always filled with challenges and surprises. Making the structure work for the world today requires innovation with healthy respect to the history already in place. By using a piece of vintage Victorian hardware the history is included. In using a piece of family hand work, I put some of my own history into the mix and by adding a quilt as background it honors the future purpose of the Gaches Mansion. Blending the elements into a reflection of the Innovation and Restoration project ahead for The La Conner Quilt and Textile Museum.”
Working in the mixed media world, this artist has incorporated found metal objects with the softer elements of textiles. The background layer is a piece of rusted iron plate, found and torch-cut by the artist. The next layer is filmy gauze with frayed edges. This is followed by a machine quilted pieces edged with small squares. Next, a piece of crochet embellished with beads; the crochet was handed done through her family. In the center of the work, is a rusted door knob plate with a bit of string and beads added to finish. This piece has a hanging wire.
