“Thomas ‘Spider’ Turkey will be inspecting the renovations for the La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum. As a resident, he is aware of the importance of updating the old Gaches Mansion and returning it to the beauty of by-gone days!

Original design. Techniques: free motion stitching, appliqué of the turkey to the background creating a 3D effect. The source materials are photos—my husband’s photo of the turkey and mine of the mansion.”

The background is composed of a collage of elements, various prints and batiks form sky, trees, bushes, grass, and fence. The various pieces are machine sewn to the background in a raw edge appliqué technique. A photo transfer technique is used to create the turkey and the Gaches Mansion on the right. Machine quilting, in a free-motion style, is used to enhance the trees and grass. This same style quilting is used to form feathers and the wattle on the turkey. The piece is finished with binding fabrics color matched to the background fabrics and has a hanging sleeve.
