Textiles are defined as a product made of fibers. These fibers include natural and synthetic materials. Textiles surround us and become so much a part of our lives that we often don’t appreciate how our lives are touched by textiles. We use textiles for shelter and protection, as clothing, as identity, and as art. Some textiles may be purely functional, others may have an artistic value, and some may be a blend of both, as seen in the photo of the sweater by Kaffe Fassett, left. This exhibit explores various techniques used to form textiles: knitting, lace making, weaving, silk fusion, crocheting, felting, etc. We will also see pieces which include readymade textiles and how artists use these textiles as both a source for inspiration and as an avenue for interpretation.
