Coxcomb and Currants
Maker, Unknown
c. 1870
78″ x 80″
This 1870′s beauty is in red & blue-green on white, composed of nine blocks with hand appliquéd motifs. Five of the blocks have the Cockscomb flowers and Currant branches surrounding a ‘bull’s eye’ motif, while the remaining four blocks have Currants and Rosebuds surrounding the ‘bull’s eye’. The center panel of blocks is surrounded by a tiny red piping, followed by a border of leaves and currants.
Hand quilted through all appliqués, the Cockscomb and Currants blocks have quilting in a 5/8″ hanging grid. The Currant and Rosebud blocks have a feathered wreath in corner space above the rosebuds with the balance in diagonal lines, spaced at 1/4″. The border has a feathered wreath over each leaf or currant appliqué with the balance in 1/4″ diagonal lines. The quilt is finished with a red straight-grain binding machine sewn to top, which is turned to back to reveal 1/8″ piping on front.
