Quilt/Textile of the Month-July 2010

Category:  Appliqué (hand), hand-embroidered, machine pieced, hand quilted

Centennial Quilt (Old Glory)

Maker, Lucille Hora
c. 1980
97″ x 104″

The white stars are hand appliquéd with a running stitch to the red circle, which is hand appliquéd with a running stitch to the blue squares. The two shields of the United States are embroidered in a satin stitch. The blocks of the states are hand-embroidered using a running stitch for most of the embroidery with touches of lazy daisy and satin stitches. This quilt is hand-tied in a mix of blue & white and red & white yarns. In addition to the quilt, we were also given the original patterns from the newspaper.

The patterns were clipped out of “The Seattle Star”, a daily newspaper published from 1899-1947. The “Old Glory” pattern, designed by Mary Erckenbrack, appeared on Mondays and Thursday from February 29 to August 25, 1932. This newspaper pattern gives the printed state name and a line drawing of the state emblem, motto, or flower. The maker is told which colors to use and is given the choice of whether to use embroidery or appliqué. Lucille adapted other blocks from different newspaper patterns for Alaska and Hawaii, as they had not yet become states when this set of patterns were printed. The “Old Glory” patterns are on display with the quilt.
