Courthouse Steps Quilt
Maker, Unknown
c. 1880
62″ x 80″
Multi-colored in browns, reds, oranges, greens. This Log Cabin Variation begins with a dark center surrounded by 1/4″-1/2″ logs, each hand-pieced to the foundation block. Most of the fabrics are solid colors, with a few prints. The maker decided to place the red blocks to form a strong diagonal across the quilt.
The 9″ blocks are made of both cotton and wool fabrics. The backing is a small-scale madder printed on cotton. Hand-applied, black twill tape finishes the edges.
Part of our permanent collection – Jane Jackson Collection.
