The Museum is raising funds for repair and restoration of the historic 1891 Gaches Mansion, home of the La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum. With help from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust and hundreds of museum supporters, we have raised over $200,000 to date!

Fifteen talented quilt/fiber artists agreed to participate in the Museum’s Capital Campaign “Innovation/ Restoration” Quilt Challenge, and the stunning results are the works of art you see here. 100% of the funds raised through sale of these pieces will benefit the restoration.

All the remaining quilts are being offered on eBay, at the Museum’s eBay page. The quilts may also be purchased through the Museum Store and are currently on display at the Museum.

We thank the following artists for taking part in the Innovation/Restoration Challenge: Thom Atkins, Jo Baner, Teri Bever, Opal Cocke & Amy Cowan, Karin Franzen, Anne Gillihan, Sonia Grasvik, Geoff Hamada, Louise Harris, Trisha Hassler, Luke Haynes, Marjorie Horton, Vivian Kapusta, Helen Remick, and Lorraine Torrence.

This program will feature true stories of intrepid women quilters who braved the westward migration of the 1800s. Learn how women coped with harsh frontier conditions and kept their connections to home through their quilt-making. To lessen the boredom of walking beside a wagon 8 hours a day, women often quilted as they walked. Few belongings were taken on the trail but quilts were essential for warmth and bedding. They also served as insulation for wagons, buckboard padding, protection of valuables, and often served as burial cloths for family members lost along the way.

Included in the lecture are: preparing for the journey west, friendship quilts, utilitarian quilts, new patterns from the trail, and fabric diaries from the trail. Excerpts from diaries will document the fortitude and amazing spirit of pioneer quilters, including one woman who survived the trek west, settled in Oregon and during her lifetime completed 14 quilts and raised 9 children!

$12, includes admission to all Museum exhibits. $5 for members.

Do you love the look of those really skinny lines and curves, but don’t know how to make them? Now is your chance to learn. Carol shares the secrets of piecing them, and you can make those practice blocks into a lovely wall quilt (41 x 36) full of those “sensuous lines and curves”!

We will start with piecing simple lines that you cut improvisationally on small pieces of fabric that will turn out to be 7 ½” blocks. The middle section of “sensuous lines and curves” is made by couching and becomes the centerpiece for the quilt. All of this is done with no pinning and a minimal amount of measuring to free you up and allows you to think outside of the box. You’ll also learn how to finish your quilts with facings instead of bindings.

You’ll be thrilled with the resulting small quilt, which you can do in any 4-5 basic colors you like. Check Carol Taylor’s website to see more quilts Carol has made using these same techniques in her Linear Series, and then come make your very own version.

$125; One-Day Workshop; includes lunch.

We will tame them by fusing, and learn to mix them with other textured looking fabrics. And you won’t need much of any one fabric…even scraps will do.

You’ll learn a bit about composition and how to balance it with both color and size. You’ll learn about fusing and how to finish your quilts with facings as opposed to bindings. And Carol will also teach you how to quilt and couch those “perfect” circles that have almost become a trademark on her quilts. You’ll be thrilled with the resulting small quilt, which you can do in many different color schemes, and hang in your own home or give as a gift. Visit Carol Taylor’s website to learn more about this dynamic quilt artist.
